Travelling Around the Island

Many visitors bring a car to Islay, either on the ferry or by hiring one locally. Car hire is available on the island; Islay Car Hire and Cresswell Cars are two options. Availability can be limited during busy periods, so it is best to book ahead.

There are now a good number of taxis available on Islay, but advance booking is highly recommended.

Public transport on Islay is limited. If you are not bringing or hiring a car, we recommend checking timetables in advance and planning your journeys accordingly.

Travel Insurance

We recommend that all guests take out travel insurance that covers cancellation due to weather or mechanical disruption. Ferries and flights to the island can be affected by adverse weather, and it is advisable to be covered in case your travel plans change.

Travel FAQ

Do I need to book the ferry in advance?

Yes. Vehicle spaces on the ferry must be booked in advance. This is especially important during summer and around the Feis Ile whisky festival.

What if my travel is disrupted?

Weather and mechanical issues can affect both ferries and flights. We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation and disruption. If you are delayed, contact us as soon as possible so we can help where we can.

Which ferry port is closest to Ayen Cottage?

Port Askaig is the closest ferry terminal to Ayen Cottage, at around five miles. Port Ellen is a 30 minute drive away. The beauty of Islay is that traffic is light, so there is always time for breakfast, no matter which port your ferry leaves from.
